"For me, safari is a voyeur's window into a natural world of symmetry and perfection and an atmosphere of complete and utter serenity. observing a herd of zebra through my lens would always bring peace to my soul. Nature doesn't always need colour to portray her beauty, or a shape to outline her existence. Her simplicity is all around us, it breathes, and it lives, and you have to believe it if you wish to preserve it. I would have driven past these zebra at least 100 times during my time in the Madikwe game reserve in South Africa's north west province, and each day delivered new hopes as the herd flourished and developed. Once a cultivated farming community now returned to the natural world Madikwe holds promise for modern conservation, a "natural" success story."    Deon De Villiers - conservationist and wildlife photographer

today various zebra sub species are listed as "near threatened to critically endangered" on the international union for conservation of nature (IUCN) red list of threatened species.
